Dahil nakaupo lang din naman sa computer ko ang mga files na ito (at kasalukuyan akong may tinatamasang libreng oras), nais ko lang ipamahagi kung ano pinag daanan nung huli kong TVC ... simple lang ang kinalabasan ngunit nose bleed ang proseso....

Magsimula tayo sa agency board... nakakatuwa na siya kasi medyo abstract... may bagets, nag drowing ng cartoon freind at nag tanim siya ng gitara at tumubo iyon at nag ipon sila ng youtube vids ng freinds niya... at syempre usage shot at logo...
So abante sa directors board... 3 boards ang kinailanagn kong itawid sa isang gabi sapagkat nagmamdali ang production nito (pero nag ka delay delay din dahil sa mga kung anu manng cheverloo ng client), may pagka abstract din yung una kong board for this pero kumunot ang nuo nung thundercats na boss nung mga client... so ito na lang yung approved board... (guhit ni J. Amar... mabilis, malufet).
Nag aayos ng webcam yung garl, nagplay ng musica, nag rock out... ipapakita na yung webcam niya ay isang creature, kukunin niya yung file niya from the webcam at ikakalat sa mundo ng internets at ayun usage shot na mahiwaga...
So sige... naintindihan na ni thundercats boss client (in fairness madali naman mag pa approve duon sa actual marketing team) matapos magtanong ng mga tipong "ano yang bunny webcam na yan, may ganyan ba talaga?"..."bakit may clouds... ano yang hawak niya na may pakpak... ginagawa ba yan ng mga bata talaga"... opo!
So ayun... concept art naman ang sunod, ano hitsura ng mundong internets?... basta ayaw ko ng feeling hitech kasi normal na na bagay ang internets.... inarkilahan ko ang aking kapatid para gumawa ng mga disenyo, ang tanging instruction ko lang ay "I-drawing lahat ng bagay sa internets"...

Kitang kita mo sa mga mukha nila ang pagiging excited... nakaka aliw lalo ang mga baklitang bagong ladlad at finally makakapag suot ng fasyown na damit... kahit mainit! Andiyan yung mga nagtatanong kung nasaan ang Math building at saan ang "Room TBA"... ehe. Sa Casaa ang lunch! ang mayaman, sa Chocolate Kiss! Ang experto...sa lutong bahay!
Sa Fine Arts ang Freshman ay yung may dalang malaking sketchpad at parang ninja na may tube na lalagyan ng papel... saka mo na matututunang mag baon ng maliit na tube at ilang pirasong papel. Sa unang lingo ng pagpasok andiyan yung chikang "so which highschool did you come from... oh so you know...." ang papayat pa ng mga ka batch ko nun! Ngayon, maliban sa iba, parang tumira ng helium!
Ako first day, first subject, pinagdrop ako ng professor, ang ingay ko daw... na bad vibes sa akin (sampung beses pa kasi ang pagka hyper ko nun at kalbo ako)... so ayun diretso sa office at swerte naging dalawa ang block ko, doble friends!
Nakikita niyo ba sa Edsa (or elsewhere) ang billboard ng mokong na ito?

Is popular music really just for kids? did I like Eraserheads simply because I was young & they sang the sentiments of every highschool & college kid? Is there no one out there singing about the corporate world? How about new music for lolos? Is that the reason why old people listen to music from their youth because nothing new is made for them? Thats a bit sad if you think about it... as I get older I find that less & less new music appeal to me so I pop in my 90s playlist... creative stagnation? Scary...
Aliw siguro makarinig ng kanta tungkol sa tatay na naiinis kasi tinakas na naman ng anak niya yung kotse niya... or galit ng missis kasi lumalaki yung tiyan ng mister niya at ayaw maligo bago matulog... or angst ng Lolo kasi panay reklamo ang mga bata... wala lang...
My mantra is "Kapag gusto maraming paraan, kapag ayaw maraming dahilan"... that is how I approach my daily art project... nalulungkot ako para sa mga taong parating nagkukwento ng mg gusto nilang mga creative pursuits maging nobela, short film, picture book o kung anuman pero "wala silang time"... unless presidente ka ng Pilipinas or ina ng labing dalawang bata... may oras at may oras ka naman siguro at magagwan mo ng paraan... disiplina lang...
I started my daily art project in 2006 because as a freelancer my days tend to melt together... mondays would be saturdays & January would be March in a fart. My life would be so hectic one moment & inredibly dull when I have no work. I did not want to watch so many episodes of TV serieses or consume too many comic books or play 55 straight hours of Playstation... I wanted to be productive.... I promised I would never say "I have nothing to do"...
So in between doing commercials, music videos & the uphill climb that is my film, i drew, took pictures & colored... maganda siyang therapy... walng panahon mag angst or mag emo ang taong may parating ginagawa...

Gusto ko yung kanta (matapos kong malagpasan yung akwardness ng "gangsta" at yung mga itsura nila...ka init at naka jacket pa yung iba). Maganda at madamdamin ang mga verses at magagaling nga sila mag rap... naweirdohan lang ako na bakit pareho sila ng concerns nila Tupac Shakur... ganun ba talaga buhay nila... or masyado lang nilang dinibdib yung hip hop culture? Or is it a case of them re articulating hip hop to what they have? Bakit "Gangsta"...? Just the thought of these kids hearing about Tupac & B.IG. in the 90s & then taking it to heart & becoming violent makes me sad...
Have you ever contested other people's hapiness? For example... you have a classmate that is extremely sharp & will most probably be the big boss of a multi national company & then 10 years later you meet him & he has a minimum wage job but says he is happy... & in your head you go "yeah right"... Well this new research on hapiness will make one think otherwise (watch teh whole clip, it's quite amazing)...
So kung masaya ka... masaya ka talaga, regardless of the conditions... I have to go rewire my brain now : )
Tapos ka na magtrabaho...hindi ka pa din mabayad bayaran... para kang kawawang pulubi na nananiningil...
Lagpas na sa anim na bwan mula nung nagwawa mo yung trabaho, wala pa ding bayad... kalokohan... nakakbwisit... IGNITE MEDIA accounting... bad kayo... baaaad! Magpapasko na! Tae ang ibibigay sa inyo ni Santa Claus.... (bad din dati yung DDB accounting pero nagbayad din yun after 7 months)

We had the gretest portalet on Earth though... it was airconditioned & had potpurri & alcohol & someoen to contantly clean it after it is used...
And now I cough & I coug & Iwanted to go & jog today for it is a Sunday & UP is very ncie ona Sunday but I felt so weak when I reached UP & I watched in envy as the Lolos ran around... Lolo joggers are stronger than me (even when I'm not sick).

Oh this is such a trip... my film's synopsis in French!

Comme dans toute histoire d’amour, il y a toujours des complications:les violentsmonstres-parents de Sally, son petit copain -un sportif qui ne prend pas soin d’elle-, les devoirs, encore des monstres et l’incapacité innée de Marty, malgré son rêve de protéger l’amour de sa vie, à faire quelque chose par rapport à tout cela.

The film is about Marty, your common cookie cutter comic book geek who wants to be a Super Hero. He has the usual dilemma of being secretly in love with his quirky, beautiful best friend, Sally (a girl that likes building mechanical things like little robots & dish dryers).
Like every love story, it has its complications: Sally’s abusive monster parents, her uncaring jock boyfriend, homework, more monsters and Marty’s innate ability to do nothing about everything despite his fantasies of defending the love of his life from the world.
Given his ineptitude, and with time catching up on the both of them, will Marty save Sally and save himself in the process?
Saving sally is inspired partly inspired by Amelie... so aliw na magkakaroon siya ng French translation... ; )

So may namatay na naman sa Hazing... when I was a student in UP, almost once a year you would see "Justice For ______" posters & banners hanging around, the fraternity violence related deaths were quite frequent they should have made permanent slates where you just put the name of the victim & insert the picture. This fraternity bullshit really boils my blood. Can somebody smart please rationalize this to me? I realize fraternities are institutions & do help in world where contacts are as precious as education... but how on earth am I suppose to buy "brotherhood" after they beat you up? what the fuck right? My friend was telling my how bloody his legs were when he was being hazed & how great he felt when the people hitting him with a paddle said "welcome brother"...what the fuck rightt? Brother ka diyan... sigh.... somebody please explain this... feeling ko so many adults who are now in power (senators, lawyers, fathers) just rationalize thier hazing experience as a rite of passage & deem it necessary simply because they went through it... but chicken pox was neccesary too 10 years ago... now people don't need to get chicken pox... I dont see the logic... I really dont. I mean cant Fraternities just screen applicants through non violent means? And don't get me started on frat wars... sigh.
(Disclaimer... this post is not an attack on Fraternities as an institution, merely a rant on Fraternity related violence).
10 pm... I was alone & I was drawing & I heard the flutter of tiny wings... I thought it was a moth then when I looked...eeeek! Flying ipis! There are very few things on earth scarier than flying ipis.... because you could never tell what it wants to do. I bolted out of my chair & went across teh room opposite it & I watched in horror where it would land... It landed on my comics then crawled around Apocalypse & Batman (both action figures)... then it flew again & landed on one of the computers... I could not use swatiing tsinelas technique for I did not want o mess up my monitors or have ipis gunk on the computer tables... I ran to the pantry & looked for Raid... all I found was Glade Apple! I went back to my office & I saw it perched on Galactus & I sprayed it with Glade.... spray spray spray!.... which ofcourse was useless but it did make the office smell fresh... then it flew again & I shreiked & it landed on the floor & KILLING STOMP TECHNIQUE! Splotch! "DIIIIE!" And that was the end of Ipis.... adreneline rush from an insect... that is how mundane my life is : )

Gumising ako sa maulan na umaga. Nag alarm ako kasi espesyal ang araw na ito. Delivery ng bagong toys.
Para akong timang na sobrang excited makarating sa toy store. Parang pasko... puno ang mga shelves ng bagong Legendary heros na figures. Matagal ko na itong inaabangan (ang guhit sa ibaba ay para sa Project 365 ko). Hindi tumatanggap ng card yung toy store... napatakbo tuloy ako sa ATM machine... as in tumakbo ako. Takot baka maubusan ng laruan.
Ayan madami akong binili! Hwag niyo na tanungin kung magkano ang nagastos ko, basta malaki...one month na sweldo ko na siya sa una kong trabaho nuong 1998.
Nakabunggo ko si Reinard, isang art director ng isang ahensiyang naka trabaho ko na. Sabi niya okay lang naman gumastos ng malaki sa laruan. Di namn daw ako nambabae o nag da drugs. Good point.
Ang saya saya ng maraming bagong laruan. Nung bata ako kapag magpabili ako ng laruan sa nanay ko ay makakrinig ako ng talumpati tungkol sa pera... na hindi daw ito tumutubo sa puno.
Nabili ko itong manikang Fantasic Four sa halgang 200 piso. Pagka mura. Aliw yung toy store na ito. Nakaka aliw kasi sa Farmers Cubao (reprezent) siya. Dito minabuti ng distributor unang ibagsak ang Legendary heroes. May mga lagpas 30 na tao na sa toy store pagbukas pa lang ng mall. Lahat kami parang mga adik na kumukuha ng rasyon ng droga.
May program din pala. Nagpa raffle sila ng isang malaking PITT na action figure. Nanalo ako ng mga gahetong ito, consolation prize. Kaya sulit na din. Meron din nag talk tungkols a customizing. Nagbigay siya ng tips kung paano i diretso ang baliktot na claws ni Wolverine.
Tingan niyo, nakaka aliw yung "Crowd". Panay matatanda na. Ang pinaka bata ata dun ay 25 taong gulang. Naaliw ako kasi natuwa ako dun sa "event" para siyang christmas party. Tapos nagbigay pa ng mineral water at fudgee bar yung toy store sa lahat ng mga nagiintay ng resulta ng raffle. Dapat 20 minutos lang ako sa mall pero 5 oras din ang tinagal ko.
Nakaktuwang isipin na wala akong interes sa anumang gimik. Opening ng eksibit o party ng mga kaibigan ko, tinatamad ako. Concert... naiingayan na ako... Kahit awards show, hindi din ako pumupunta. Kailan lang ay nanalo ako ng "Best Bidyo" sa Awit Awards kaso nasa bahay lang ako naka shorts at nag dodrowing ng green na aso. Hindi kasi talaga ako masyado mahilig kapag maraming humans. Pinaglagpas ko nga yung talk ni Quentin Tarnatino eh... pero oks lang katabi ko naman siya sa premiere ng pelikula niya... nahiya lang ako makipag-shake hands kasi hindi pa ako worthy.
Pero natuwa ako ngayong araw. Masaya yung lugar kasi wala akong nakausap tungkol sa film making, advertising, graphics designs at walang chiks. Panay toys lang ang usapan. Sculpting ng toys...distribution...kailan marerelease yung sunod. Maihahalintulad ko yung eksena duon sa Ghost World... yung party ng mga record collectors...minus Thora & Scarlette... panay mga Steve Buscemi lang. Ganun ka mundane... Kaya aliw.
Sumali kami ni Reinard sa "create your own hero" art contest. May premyo na laruan na nagkakahalagang 800 pesos (woot)... kaya hayun nag drowing kami. Sayang hindi ko dala ang aking tools. Heto ang character ni Reinard.
Heto naman ang sa akin. Astig na super hero yan. Magaling siya mag blog at magsulat ng poems at umiyak sa ulan at dilim! Hindi ko na inintay ang resulta ng contest kasi kung manalo ako, kawawa naman yung mga 3 oras nag dodrowing ng seryoso na mala Jim Lee,.10 minuto ko lang naman ito dinorowing.

I recently completed a tiny campaign for this new Smart Satellite phone product.. we did two tv ads & a picture book.
What I liked about this project was how pleasant the process was.I was lucky enough to work with a collaborative agency (DM9) and an open minded client.
Below is a page from the agency board... the art director, Herbert, came up with this delightful picture book type story that explains why families of sea farer's should use the new product... their visual pegs for the project was the works of Tim Burton & some of the music videos that I had done before where I used stylized animation...
I was so excited to work on the project that I immediately created a 10 second sample animation which the agency & client liked very much. The client though, thought that my character design looked very scary & they wanted something that was more "endearing"....
So to figure out what they meant by "endearing" me & Mister Peter illustrator came up with character sheets & they picked out what they thought was "endearing"...
It was also my first time to ask the agency to re work their copy... I don't normally touch it because I know how hard it was to get that copy approved to begin with. But since the directive of the CD & AD was for me to "career" this, I made sure I wasn't just merely supplying visuals to copy... ehe... sounds a bit mundane but it's quite a big deal for me....
Mr. Peter drew my storyboard & me & my sister colored it... this project was really meant to look very "Avidy"....
So then on to the shoot.... I had the prod designer make me a pop up book based on artwork that I had prepared...
I asked the production designer to follow the design of the waves in the picture book. We also filled the room with ship toys... that little galleon cost 2,500 pesos... I saw the price tag & it took the props men 6 hours to glue this together... it's not seen in the commercial so I am honoring it's existence in this blog....
I thought our set looked to clean so I got crayons & started drawing on the walls...
Here is a closeup of my wall doodles, sayang you don't really get to see it in the TVC but it adds to the over all texture....
On the left is the art director & on the right is the big boss of the ad agency... both wanted to doodle on the walls too...
Here is Mr. Chroma head.... he has that big chroma thing because I'm replacing his head with a big head. The shoot was very quick... the AD Raly is an institution in getting great performances from children... we'd promise the kid one robot from the set per good take. We only took like 6 or 7 hours-ish... but the post production took over 3 weeks...
So here is the version of the commercial that I like the mostest. I like it because the agency let me help with the copy and only two people were involved in animating it.... me & this kid Enzo. I am surprised the client wanted this to air because this version was originally an agency initiative....
This one here is what I actually shot... It is more of a commercial... in the sense that it talks about the products strengths more directly... it is still quite nice. I am very happy with the simple & smooth transitions that I made for this....
This piece of retro animation is just priceless... human gods & celestial sex & the Mormon Jesus... just watch!
(No offense meant to Mormons by the way... this cartoon is just too nutty to be taken seriously)
