Blog EntryOf Bands That Make People HappyFeb 18, '08 11:02 PM
for everyone

This was my drawing for the day last feb 13 at the UP fair concert thingee...

It's either I'm getting old or I want more from music... I do not know... how do you feel?

Is popular music really just for kids? did I like Eraserheads simply because I was young & they sang the sentiments of every highschool & college kid? Is there no one out there singing about the corporate world? How about new music for lolos? Is that the reason why old people listen to music from their youth because nothing new is made for them? Thats a bit sad if you think about it... as I get older I find that less & less new music appeal to me so I pop in my 90s playlist... creative stagnation? Scary...

Hahaha! Oo nga, 'no? Interesting theory, Avid. After all, most rock musicians are young, so they write about the angst of the youth. By the time they get older and have other concerns, most of them have dropped out of the music industry. Kaya siguro hanggang ngayon, may market pa rin ang Rolling Stones and U2.

A friend recently posted about why music from the '90s, when she was in high school, means more to her. We were wondering about what exactly the reason is -- I don't think it's as simple as the memories those songs conjure, 'cause new songs can bring up newer memories. And I don't think it's only 'cause we had more time for music when we were young. Baka nga one of the big reasons is what you've pointed out. 'Di na tayo nakaka-relate sa mga topic ng kanta ngayon, pero wala namang gumagawa ng bago na makaka-identify tayo. I guess that's why many people "graduate" to older forms of music, such as jazz, as they mature. But for rockers like me for whom jazz just doesn't do it, finding new music that appeals to me is getting harder and harder...especially since I don't want to get stuck with decades-old music and be one of those who say "They just don't make them the way they used to..." Lolang-lola, 'di ba?! ;-)

it's probably a matter of perspective.

maybe new music becomes less and less appealing because the content may be poor - the lyrics suck or perhaps, the messages that the artists are trying to exude are the same; second, crappy arrangement; third is the lack of 'spirit'... perhaps, the reason why people resort to oldies music is because new music has failed - in certain aspects - to reach out to those who are looking for something to believe in.

a professor once explained in my humanities class that music and other fads alike 'return' every 7 years.. (it's like bell bottoms being reinvented! ) so since it's considerably a cycle, kung anu-ano nang dagdag bawas ang nangyayari, but the 'essence' of it should still be there.. what's happening right now is that people tend to spice things up a bit, add in their teeny-bopper ideas, and other crapola that goes with it - and voila! what do you get? a hilarious remainder of the past . haha!

what's even worse right now is that, knowing that mahirap na ngang maka-relate at nagdedeteriorate n din ang new music - the majority of artists right now are, sad to say, FABRICATED TALENTs..so you couldn't expect a pogi-rock artist singing a song about his son trashing his car unless the Label tells him to do so..otherwise he'd be out in the cold begging for some other company to take him in.. (pero sa underground scene, anything goes! hehe)

anyway.. these are just some of my mental farts.. share share lng.. =)

peace!

love your vids by the way.. nice!

oo nga no.. wala, capitalist world effect siguro.. baka yung mas may "fan power" at "nag-my-parents-for-money-so-i-can-watch-their-concert" power ay mga kabataaan, so ang nakakakuha ng record deals ay mga kumakanta para sa bata.
